The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to N77,000, effective from July 2024.

This new figure is N7,000 higher than the recently revised national minimum wage.

The announcement was made through a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), dated September 25, 2024, and signed by the commission’s chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta.

According to a press statement released by Caroline Embu, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations at NYSC, the increase follows the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which set the minimum wage for workers at N70,000.

The statement noted, โ€œPrior to this, the Director General, NYSC Brigadier General YD Ahmed, had paid an advocacy visit to the Chairman in which he solicited for a robust welfare package for Corps Members.”

Brigadier General Ahmed expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for this timely gesture. He added, “It will not only bring much-needed relief to the Corps Members but also boost their morale and motivate them to do even more in their service to the nation.”

Before this increment, Corps Members received a monthly allowance of N33,000, in line with the previous national minimum wage.
