The Brazilian full-back is the most decorated footballer in the history of the sport, with 23 of his 43 honours won while donning the famous blue and red of Barcelona.

Boasting a playing career that spans two decades and counting, it is undeniable that Alves’ best football came at the Camp Nou.

Now at the ripe age of 38, Alves has entered the twilight of his playing days – but still harbours aspirations of returning to Barcelona in the January transfer window having recently terminated his contract with Brazilian outfit Sao Paulo.

According to reports in Spain, Barcelona is not exploring the possibility of re-signing Alves despite the fact it would be a ‘low cost’ move.

Alves opened up on the potential switch to Spanish outlet sport.es, revealing: “It would sound very opportunistic to say that Barca needs me now.

“I always said that I left because I saw things were not the way I thought they should be.

“You never want to see everything that [has] ended up happening since I left. I’ve said that when Barca need me and want me, I would be at their disposal regardless of where I am.

“The affection, love and respect I have for this club is too much.

“If Barca thinks they need me, they just have to call me. I still think I can contribute anywhere, but more at Barca because of the number of young players that they have now.”

Despite nearing his 40s, Alves has explained how he has no plans to call time on his illustrious playing career anytime soon.

“I always look for a club that allows me to compete with the greats, fight for titles and be decisive wherever I am.

“I do not consider another scenario that is not this. It was for this reason that I chose Sevilla, Barcelona, and all the places where I went.

“I want to bring a winning, fighting and conscious mentality wherever I go.”

Current Barca boss Ronald Koeman is facing mounting pressure over his job as the Catalan giants languish as low as ninth in La Liga – five points off of fierce rivals Real Madrid who occupy the top spot.

Just seven games in it appear Barca are all but out of the title race, as their attentions could quickly turn to secure Champions League qualification for next season. [MSN]
