A group of legal practitioners, who describe themselves as members of the APC Legal Team have criticized the decision of the 200 lawyers who volunteered to defend Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in the governorship election dispute at the Supreme Court.

The legal practitioners, who held a press conference on Wednesday, said they have condemned the actions of the “self-proclaimed 200 lawyers supporting Abba Kabir Yusuf”.

“Let’s be crystal clear–the sole recognized association for lawyers is the Nigerian Bar Association. It’s disheartening to witness these lawyers challenge the decision of court while neglecting the vital principle of refraining from public discussions on ongoing legal matters.

“We wholeheartedly respect the decision of the court and proudly affirm our support for Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna. We stress the paramount importance of upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the sanctity of the court. Any decision to tarnish the court’s image or resort to blackmail is unequivocally unacceptable,” read a statement signed by Mustapha Idris and Hadiza Nasir Ahmad.

“To the 200 lawyers entangled in this controversy, we implore you to rise above political machinations, and permit the court to execute its duties without external interference.

“Lawyers as guardians of justice must preserve the integrity of our noble professions even when faced with unfavorable judgements,” the APC lawyers said.

However, when asked, they were unable to explain why 500 private lawyers also volunteered to support Mr Gawuna on the same case at the apex court.
