The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Aboki, has ordered the release of 37 inmates from the Goron Dutse correctional facility due to their poor health conditions and prolonged detention without trial.

This development was disclosed in an audio message made available to journalists by the spokesperson of the Kano State judiciary, Baba Jibo.

In the audio, it was explained that Justice Aboki’s decision was based on the Criminal Justice Release from Custody Special Provision Act, which allows state Chief Judges to release inmates where necessary during visits to correctional facilities.

According to Justice Aboki, many of the released inmates had fallen seriously ill and had not received adequate medical attention. “Some of these inmates have become very weak due to their deteriorating health, and releasing them will allow their families to provide the care they need,” she said.

Justice Aboki also noted that the ongoing economic challenges in the country had worsened the situation for the inmates, as they were not receiving sufficient food. She urged the Kano State government to provide better feeding and welfare support for the remaining inmates.
