Kano Emirate Council has commenced its physical online voters’ card registration exercise after a roundtable meeting with media owners on Monday, 11/2022.

The registration exercise which took place at the palace, Kofar Kudu, gathered a number of people who attended the emir’s calling to partake in the online voters’ card registration exercise.

Dignitaries and stakeholders who attended the exercise expressed their gratitude for the effort of the emirate council towards creating awareness to the public on the essence of obtaining voters’ card.

Emir of Kano, Alh. Aminu Ado Bayero stressed that PVC is paramount to all citizens, because it is pivotal to voting representatives to any political office in the nation.

He stressed that this is the accurate moment for a citizen who is above 18 years to register for voters’ card or those that need adjustment.

“Previous voting Kano state provided the highest number of votes, so it is necessary for people to register to maintain the status quo. Because the higher the voters determine the higher the votes for the rightful candidate.

“Currently INEC has innovated a simple procedure to register voters’ card online with the use of smartphones”. He said.

The emir added that the online voters card registration training will be a step down training to ensure the highest number of eligible voters obtained their PVC.

He further called on clerics, stakeholders and civil society organizations to educate people on the importance of voters’ card.

Alhaji Usman Bello who represented Mallam Muhammed Garba Commissioner of information Kano state, said “Voters card is a necessity for all eligible citizens to possess, Kano has been the forefront in terms of voting so it is vital to continue creating awareness as to avoid voting of unqualified candidates”.

He urged other emirates in Kano state to embrace this voters’ card registration sensitization.

The organiser, Halilu Baba Dantiye mni, called on the attention of INEC to upgrade the data collection procedures as to make registration easier to voters.

The commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Professor Riskwa A. Shehu, who spoke on the laws guiding voting in Nigeria said, before an individual becomes eligible to vote he/she must reach some required criteria.

“A citizen is allowed to acquire a voters’ card if he/she has reached 18 year and has obtained a good mental health capacity”.

Stressed that PVC is paramount for voting, advised citizens to obtain it for efficaciousness instead of disadvantageous.

He said that INEC developed the newly online registration system due to the traditional process being stressed and also discouraged others to register.

“The online registration allows INEC to capture basic biodata of an individual, which at subsequent the remaining procedures will be completed at the preferred center chosen by an individual”

He disclosed that, in every local government area INEC has 2 centers with the addition of 3 centers in the metropolis.

“Due to the lack of centers are not enough, INEC further decided to go round the 484 wards in Kano to register voters, because of the distance of people to their local government,” He said.

500 people were coached to train others – KYPC, Chairman

He unveiled that “150 volunteers were invited to teach the public on the process of online voters’ card registration and 500 people were edified to teach others in different communities of the state”.

Recall that INEC revealed that elections will commence on February 25 for presidential and senators while on 11 of March 2023 governorship  and house of representatives will hold.
