A member representing Tarauni Constituency in the Kano House of Assembly, Kabiru Sule, on Wednesday sponsored free eye surgery for 1,500 of his constituents to treat cataract, trachoma and provide eye glasses.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the screening and treatment of the eye defects would be conducted by the Visions Savers Eye Care Center at Tarauni primary health care centre.

Speaking while flagging-off the treatment, Sule said the gesture was aimed at helping the patients to regain their normal sight.

He said that the intervention was aimed at supporting vulnerable persons with eye challenges who could not afford to pay for medical services.

“This is a pilot programme where 1,500 patients will benefit.

“The beneficiaries will be made up of the aged, vulnerable persons, women, and children.

“Each beneficiary will have access to eye treatment, surgery, and drugs during the exercise,” he added.

The lawmaker promised to initiate other programmes on education and youth empowerment to assist the people of the area.

Earlier, Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf, commended the lawmaker for the gesture, saying the programme was in line with the party manifesto towards supporting the poor.

Represented by the Speaker, Alhaji Ismail Falgore, the governor described the intervention as a welcome development.

He called on other members to emulate Mr Sule’s gesture and reach out to the helpless poor.

Earlier, a consultant opthalmologist, Dr. Kamal Umar, advised the beneficiaries to listen to the doctors’ instructions and advice on how to live a healthy life after the surgeries.

He also advised them to adopt personal hygiene as preventive measures against diseases.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Malam Adamu Ali and Salamatu Musa thanked the lawmaker for the initiative and urged other lawmakers to emulate him.
