Efya, a Ghanaian singer, has dismissed comparisons between the Ghanaian and Nigerian music industries, claiming that Lagos is “bigger” than Ghana.
According to Efya, Nigeria’s numerical advantage puts the country’s music industry ahead of Ghana’s.
The Ghanaian musician stated that there should be no comparisons between the two West African countries, instead urging them to collaborate.
“Nigerian and Ghanaian music markets are not the same,” Efya said in a recent interview with City 105.1 FM in Lagos. Nigerians outnumber us in terms of population. Numbers are extremely important right now. The number of people who will listen to Nigerian music in Nigeria differs from the number who will listen to Ghanaian music in Ghana. The figures are not the same.
“In terms of population, Lagos is larger than Ghana.” It’s similar to the music hub itself. Nigerians are much bigger than us. So, whenever I see people comparing, I usually ask, ‘Do you guys know?’
“There should be no parallels. What I believe we should do is work together more. Find our vibes and combine them to advance what Afrobeats will be in the future; to be the gatekeepers of our own sound. And I believe that is the power move.”
