The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) says it has metered 92, 000 customers in the South East, under the Federal Government’s National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP).

Mr. Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications, EEDC, disclosed this when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Thursday.

Ezeh said that the customers were metered under the phase zero of the programme.

He said that the EEDC was already winding up the phase, ahead of the next phase of the programme.

“The NMMP meters were distributed within EEDC franchise coverage area within the South East, which covers Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo.

“We anticipate that the next phase- “Phase 1” will commence in no distance time.

“The EEDC has also commenced its Meter Asset Provider (MAP), a metering scheme that allows customers to pay for meters and get reimbursed in form of energy over 36 equal installments,” he said.

The spokesperson for the EEDC said that the MAP, which was reintroduced after its suspension in 2020 would complement the NMMP.

He said that customers should see the new MAP as another way of accessing meters and take advantage of the scheme since it would allow them to get the meters free, as the cost of purchase will be reimbursed.

“To get started, customers are to visit the Customer Service Unit at any EEDC district office to pick up the Meter Application Form, or alternatively, log on to EEDC website (www.enugudisco.com), click on the MAP Meter Request button to fill the online form.

“Once the customer completes the form and returns to the customer service representative together with a copy of the latest electricity bill and a proof of identification (Drivers License, Voters Card, NIN or International Passport), the pre-survey process will be initiated to ascertain the appropriate meter required for installation.

“After the pre-survey process is concluded, the customer will be issued a Demand Note to make an upfront payment for the approved meter.

“This document will contain name of the MAP, the amount to be paid by the customer, the designated bank and account details. Once payment for the approved meter is made at the designated bank, a copy of the bank teller should be presented to the Customer Service representative at the EEDC district office.

“This will kick off the process for Meter installation and within 10 working days of payment, the MAP is under obligation to have metered the customer.

“Regarding the cost of the MAP meters, a single-phase meter goes for N48,263, while a three-phase meter goes for N89,069. These costs are VAT inclusive,” he said.

Ezeh added: “It is important to emphasise that meter application form is not for sale and is issued free.

“Customers should make payment into dedicated bank account as provided in the Demand Note and not to any individual or group.

“The MAP and NMMP are to operate simultaneously and customers are free to use any of the metering programmes.

“For enquiries or assistance, customers are encouraged to either approach the Customer Service representatives at the District Offices, call the MAP Help Desk on: 08150825365, the EEDC Call Center on: 084700100 or send an email to: [email protected].

NAN reports that the federal government initiated the NMMP, which provides prepaid meters free-of-charge to Nigerians, to close the wide metering gap and put an end to the estimated billing system.(NAN)
