To prevent a possible protest over the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, strike, the Lagos State Police Command has deployed officers to guard the Third Mainland Bridge.

The operatives, led by Adeniji Adele’s DPO, CSP Lanre Edegbai, are stationed at both ends of the bridge.

“We will not allow any individual or group of individuals to deprive Lagosians of their right to free movement.”

“Everyone’s rights must be respected!” tweeted Police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin on Wednesday.

The police deployment was in response to a reported threat by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to halt traffic on the bridge.

On Monday, students blocked the road leading to Ikeja’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The blockage elicited mixed reactions, with some Nigerians praising the students and others accusing them of punishing commuters for the failures of leaders.
