A group of highly respected professionals, academics, businessmen and politicians from Kano state have presented a Charter for any incoming governor of the state to implement in the interest of development and progress of the state.

The group which comprises of 24 members has proposed 13 items which they encourage any incoming governor, irrespective of his political inclination to subscribe to in order to meet the demands of the Kano people.

Reading out the charter to newsmen recently in Kano, Prof Nu’man Habib Muhammad, a member of the group stated that the charter shall be reviewed every four years to ensure compliance by the incumbent governor.

“All Gubernatorial candidates are encouraged to subscribe to this charter and undertake to fulfill the commitments contained therein.

“Within the first tenure of his/her administration, the elected Governor shall provide operational framework for the citizens to assess his/her performance.

“This Charter shall be reviewed every four {4} years after evaluating how the incumbent Governor has operated it in order to facilitate accommodation of intervening needs of the society, promote transparency as well as accountability and entrench good governance.

“The Governor, as a public servant, is to manage the affairs of the State transparently, with integrity and does not act arbitrarily” he stated.

Some of the items among the various others include:

“Conform with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and extant rules in all appointments to public offices and other responsibilities while taking cognizance of merit and inclusiveness.

“Prioritize the resuscitation of education, especially basic education with specific timelines for qualitative service delivery in terms of staffing, provision of adequate teaching aids and textbooks.

“Prioritize Agriculture and its value chain through the promotion of mechanization using adaptable technology, and support farmers with quality seeds, other relevant inputs, adequate extension services, and market guarantee with specific timelines for delivery.

“Evolve robust and actionable policy to safeguard the environment from degradation while upholding public trust in land administration and promoting responsible urban and regional planning” part of the thirteen items of the charter reads.
