One of the district heads, Abdullahi Muhammad Bawa, shared that he felt pressured to step down after receiving threats from the state government for visiting a senator who had supported efforts to improve conditions in Eastern Sokoto’s impoverished communities. Bawa noted, โI could no longer fulfill my responsibilities as a leader due to the prevailing circumstances.โ
Alhaji Lawali Shuaibu, the District Head of Takasaba, voiced additional concerns regarding rising insecurity in the area. According to Shuaibu, terrorist activities have kept farmers from accessing their lands, compounding the challenges faced by local residents.
Attempts to obtain comments from Ibrahim Dade, Sokotoโs Commissioner for Local Government, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
