The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commended Kano State residents for strictly adhering to the provisions of the electoral law that paved way for peaceful conduct of the 2023 general elections in the state.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Amb. Abdu Zango, made the commendation while addressing election stakeholders at the commission’s headquarters in Kano on Thursday.

Zango said that the electorate across the state voted for candidates of their choices, and their choices were duly returned by the electoral umpire.

“I want to thank the entire stakeholders; security agencies, leaders of various political parties, traditional rulers and indeed the eligible residents, for cooperating with the commission during and after the implementation of electoral processes in the state,” he said.

Zango also commended the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, for providing qualitative leadership during and after the election.

“When I came to Kano State about six months ago, I promised to conduct an election that everyone would be proud of.

“Though it has not been easy, that promised has been kept, and as you can see, the state remains peaceful today because the right thing was done by the commission.

“Kano State is unique and everything about it comes with new dimensions, yet we were able to meet up the expectations of the parties and the general public.

“Though we had to go for supplementary elections in some polling units, today every winner has been declared and issued his CoR, which marks the end of the 2023 elections,” the REC said.

According to the REC, the media availed INEC their platforms for direct communication to the people on issues concerning the elections.

“We thank the media tremendously for their immense help to INEC today as always. You have been so helpful in ensuring mobilisation of our people in large numbers to vote today,” he stated.

Zango also lauded leaders of political parties for demonstrating political maturity during and after the election.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Hussaini, also commended the residents for conducting themselves peacefully during and after election.

“I want to assure the good people of the Kano state that the police along with the security agencies would provide adequate security at the state tribunal as well as during the swearing ceremony of Gov-Elect on May 29,” said Husssini.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that leaders of various political parties, NGOs, civil society organisations as well as traditional and religious leaders attended the meeting. (NAN)
