The statement recalls that in 2011 when Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso returned for his second term as the Governor of Kano, he discovered rising cases of drug abuse, thuggery and joblessness.
‘’Many youths were mostly used as political thugs by politicians, and they virtually hang around government offices to beg for survival as they had nothing doing,’’ said the statement.
According to the statement, this led the former Kano Central Senator, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to form a task force committee that fought illicit drug dealers and drug abusers in the state.
‘’He established reformatory institute and that of Security Guards, all to curtail drug abuse, thuggery and joblessness of the uneducated youths in Kano.’’
‘’The reformatory institute was established to rehabilitate and build the capacities of drug addicts so that they may become responsible and productive citizens, thereby reducing the rates of crimes in Kano, which were mostly as a result of drug abuse.’’
‘’In the institute, the inmates were trained to produce shoes, garments, tailoring, and many other things. Upon graduation, the administration of Kwankwaso empowered many with start-up capital.’’
The statement said while in the institute of Security Guard, many jobless youths were trained and employed as security guards of government and private agencies, with others engaged as KAROTA staff.
‘’Undoubtedly, that put smiles on the faces of parents, spouses, relatives and children of the addicts, having, converted them from socio-security time bombs to the productive populace.’’
‘’Through that initiatives, the state witnessed a socio-economic boom and security. Hence, people went about their daily tasks with peace of mind and tranquillity without the fear of intimidation by Jobless Youths.
‘’However, the reverse is the case in the present day Kano, with thuggery, phone snatching and stabbing of the people becoming the other of the day,’’ the statement added.
The statement noted that with these and many other social ills, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement deemed it necessary to address the issue of drug abuse with the establishment of a private reformatory centre.
