A former presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) in the 1993 aborted third republic, Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa, is dead.
He died after a protracted illness.
It will be recalled that the erudite politician and astute businessman was rumoured to have died on Friday evening in trending stories on social media.

His son Habibu Bashir Tofa confirmed this to Daily News 24 in the early hours of Monday.
Bashir Othman Tofa is a Nigerian politician.
A Kanuri Muslim who hails from Kano State, Tofa was the National Republican Convention candidate in the annulled Nigeria’s June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was organised by the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida.
