The Premier League has officially announced the disqualification of Roman Abramovich as Chelsea director after the UK government imposed sanctions on the Russian businessman.

Abramovich’s assets were frozen following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine due to his relationship with President Vladimir Putin, who ordered a military operation against the neighboring country.

“Following the imposition of sanctions by the UK Government, the Premier League Board has disqualified Roman Abramovich as a Director of Chelsea Football Club,” read the Premier League statement.

“The Board’s decision does not impact on the club’s ability to train and play its fixtures, as set out under the terms of a licence issued by the Government which expires on 31 May 2022.”

Abramovich had previously announced his decision to sell Chelsea, but these measures put on hold the possible sale of the club. The Russian can’t financially benefit, either directly or indirectly, from any potential transaction. (Marca)
