Fear of environmental disaster such as erosion and environmental degradation, residents of Sabon Gari, Kano state express their heartbreaking testimonies on how raining season causes more damages to their roads and also affect their physical, mental and emotional health.

Daily News 24 visited Sabon Gari at Fagge local government of Kano state, residents lamented about the wretched state of roads in the area and how it causes hardship on the people.

The condition of the roads has become a serious issue for motorists, motorcyclists and residents affecting their daily businesses.

Anytime it rains, the road is usually flooded, making them difficult for road users to ply.

Residents complained bitterly that the bad roads were affecting their businesses and livelihood in different ways.

Sabon Gari roads suffer neglect by government  – Residents lament

A resident of new road street in Sabon Gari said the lack of proper drainage has caused a lot of chaos and affecting the health and wellbeing of the people.

She also said that the road has been in a very bad state since she moved to the street, adding: “from the first day I came here, this road has been bad since my arrival in 2012 and the its  getting worse.

During both raining and dry seasons, the road is not motorable, If motorists are not careful, it can damage their vehicles.”

Mayoral Babatunde, another resident of Sabon Gari also said the road has long been issue to the residents of the community.

He said “as a resident in Sabon Gari, our experiences with regards to transportation to our various destinations has not been really encouraging.

“There are few major roads in Sabon Gari, which some of them aren’t good enough for transportation.

Due to the heavy potholes, getting a public transport for some of us that doesn’t have our personal rides to our destinations seems hard or impossible and the effect of this cannot be ignored, It’s pathetic.” He noted

Although, attempt to repair the roads has never been fully effective, the projects always gets done half-way and neglected.

Road damaged by rain, caused erosion

This inconsistency causes more damage to the roads in Sabon Gari during rainy seasons.

Babatunde expressed that this is a bitter-sweet experience actually.

“For those who have their personal means of transportation, coping during this season is never a problem but for the less privileged in that area, coping through the bad roads is not easy and the rain on its own damages the road and causes more pothole, getting a public transport has always been a challenge.

Rainy season, unfair to our roads  – Motorists 

A motorist operator said “this road has always been a challenge for drivers, as a resident who own a car, at times I don’t go to work with my car.

“Instead, I board tricycles, I don’t know exactly what the government in this state is doing about the state of this road.

“The role of a leader is to ensure the well being of its citizens, but the reverse is the case for them, as they do not care about the welfare of the people”. He said

They appealed to government to fix the roads and make life better for them.
