Transportation is an integral part of almost all human activities especially in urban areas.

It is a known fact that road transportation is very important to all modern cities in the world.

While Transportation continues to be considered as pivotal, authorities continue to lay down modalities that would create an enabling environment for residents who either make a living from it or use it.

In Kano state, Northwest Nigeria, the government had through its regulatory agency, Kano Road and Traffic Agency KAROTA made moves to put road users on the track of obeying traffic rules amongst other laws of the land.

Recently, the agency reinforced the collection of a hundred Tax from tricycle operators in the state.

The reinforcement by KAROTA led to series of protests by some tricycle operators.

According to some of the operators who plead anonymity urged the government to revisit the policy and make readjustments.

“There is need for the authorities to look at the situation of our members, and economic status of the country to revisit the policy for necessary action.

“Most of us are running on hire purchase. It is hard for so many of our members to afford the payment”, the operators lament.

Reacting to the problem however, Chairman Tricycle Owners Association Kano (TOAKAN) Alhaji Sani Sa’id Dankoli, said their leadership reached an agreement of adding two weeks with Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA), starting from 17 of February so as make awareness on the measures taken by Kano State Government.

“We have extended the collection of the taxes till next two weeks so that our members will prepare well for the decision”, Sani Dankoli said.

While reacting to the incident, Public Relations Officer of Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA), Nablisi Abubakar Kofar Na’isa said, “the agency saddled with the responsibility of reenforcing the policy are working hand in hand with tricyclist operators association, to make sure no body right is tremble upon.”

Though the Tricycle operators in Kano State have threatened to withdraw their services and go on a warning strike on Monday over the failure of the state government to suspend collections of N100 as daily tax, the tension seems to have been doused with the temporary suspension.

But both the government agencies and Tricycle Operators are expected to agree on the easiest ways of paying and collecting taxes from road users like the tricyclists in the state.
