The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says 92.6 million Nigerians have been enroled into the national identity number (NIN) database.

According to the latest data released by the commission, Lagos and Kano are the top states in Nigeria with the highest enrolment.

NIMC’s enrolment figures, as at January this year, stood at 72.7 million and in November, 2022, the number increased by 19.9 million to 92.6 million.

In terms of gender distribution, the data revealed that 52.1 million, representing 56 percent of Nigerians so far captured in the NIN database, are male; while 40.5 million, representing 43 percent are female.

Further analysis by The Cable Index showed that Lagos has recorded the highest number of enrolments in the country with 10.3 million Nigerians captured in the state. This was followed by Kano, which recorded 8.1 million registered NINs.

Other states that made the top ten in terms of number of enrolments include; Kaduna with 5.5 million; Ogun with 3.7 million; Oyo with 3.7 million; FCT with 3.2 million; Katsina with 3.2 million; Rivers with 2.8 million; Delta with 2.5 million; and Bauchi with 2.5 million.

The data also showed that the following states have the lowest number of enrolments: Bayelsa 583,323; Ebonyi 744,869; and Ekiti 971,712.

In December 2020, Isa Pantami, minister of communications and digital economy, announced the integration policy of SIM cards into the national identification number (NIN) database.

The federal government later directed telecommunication companies to bar outgoing calls on all lines that have not complied with the NIN-SIM linkage policy from the April 4, 2022.
