Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, under the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the Kano state Ministry of Health to check the spread of a strange illness that has hit the state claiming lives and hospitalizing many recently.
Kano state has recently witnessed an outbreak of the strange illness which experts suspects it was caused by the intake of expired local juice powder.
In a communique raised after its first quarter congress for 2021, jointly signed by its Chairman, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu and Secretary, Mustapha Adamu over the weekend, the chapel called on the ministry to as a matter of urgency draw modalities to tame the situation.
The chapel also advised the state health ministry to launch an aggressive campaign against consumption of substandard and illicit food items and drugs, which has remained a major suspect of strange illnessness and sudden deaths in the state.
The Chapel also expressed worry over the rising cases of phone snatching by hoodlums in the state, which according to it, has become a source of concern in the state.
The Correspondents’ Chapel however called on the state’s Police Command to continue working assiduously in bringing an end to the menace.
As month of Ramadan fasting period approaches, the chapel called on traders in the state not to increase the prices of essential commodities as witnessed every year.
“The Chapel, therefore, tasked markets men and women to put morality and the fear of God at the forefront, while doing their business, especially, as Ramaddan approaches,” the communique reads in part.
“The Chapel, after rigorous deliberations of its affairs, with utmost observance of the NUJ Constitution as a whole label of supremacy, resolved to continue to remain the promoter of Press Freedom and free speech, without malice or hatred.
“The Chapel, which stakes members welfare as very important, observed with regret, the attitude and inordinate approach of some government and non-governmental agencies, including the security circle, which frustrate the assignment of its members, while in the course of their duty,” the Chapel said in the communique.
The Chapel further urged members of the public to continue to strictly adhere to the protocols of COVID-19. It also tasked Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje’s administration to strengthen its efforts in fighting the grivous pandemic.
