A Katsina-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Dahiru Barau-Mangal foundation, has commenced free urology surgery for about 50 vulnerable patients in Katsina State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the free surgery exercise was flagged off on Saturday at Amadi Rimi Orthopedic hospital located along Dutsinma road in the metropolis.

A member of the board of trustees of the foundation, Mr Hussaini Kabir, who inaugurated the exercise, disclosed that they have so far screened over 37 patients for the surgery.

He pointed out that the patients are presently undergoing a series of medical investigations, adding that the  exercise would be conducted at no cost to the patients.

According to him, the surgical operation is expected to commence on  Monday, Jan. 30, saying 4 to 5 patients would be treated daily.

He explained that the foundation has taken full responsibility of the expenses to be incurred during the surgery, including drugs and other necessary things until they are healed.

He added that such free medical outreach has been going on for a long time on quarterly basis and the foundation had earmarked enough funds for the exercise.

Speaking to newsmen, one of the patients with urinary tract obstruction, Malam Bishir Kado, expressed happiness for the gesture.

He said for the last seven months he has been experiencing difficulty in passing urine and expressed the hope that at the end of the surgery, he will be able to get over the problem.

Alhaji Sule Hashim, another patient from Maraban Jibia with frequent urination problems, also commended the gesture, saying only God can reward the foundation for coming to their aid. (NAN)
