Customers took to major streets in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to protest the scarcity of new naira notes, which has been a topic of discussion across major towns and cities in Nigeria.
According to Daily Post the bank customers in Ibadan are having difficulty withdrawing funds.
Our correspondent recalls that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, introduced the newly redesigned N200, N500, and N1000 denominations across the country a few weeks ago.
The apex bank also directed commercial banks to stock the newly redesigned naira notes in their Automated Teller Machines, or ATMs.
The CBN also set January 31, 2023 as the deadline for exchanging old bank notes before extending it to February 10, 2023.
It has also directed commercial banks to pay new naira notes to customers over the counter.
Our correspondent learned, however, that the majority of bank customers who attempted to withdraw money from various banks in Ibadan on Friday were unable to do so.
Protests erupted in some parts of Ibadan as a result of this.
Customers are currently protesting in the areas of Agodi Gate, Idi Ape, and Iwo Road.
To express their displeasure, the protesters set fire to several tyres.
According to a Gate resident who spoke with DAILY POST, the protesters were upset about their inability to withdraw money from banks.
“As I speak with you, protests are taking place at Gate and Iwo Road. “They’re burning tires now,” he explained.
A resident of Iwo Road confirmed that the protest is still going on.
“Yes. There is a protest going on here. “People are currently protesting on Iwo Road because they are unable to collect their money from banks,” he added.
