Subsidy pain: Labour talks tough, ASUU, protesters condemn relief plans
The groaning occasioned by the removal of the fuel subsidy grew louder on Monday as the Nigerian Labour Congress said it was ready to fight the economic pains and hardship caused by the Federal Government’s decision.
Also, university workers under the aegis of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, the University of Lagos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Congress of University Academics and protesting members of the Edo Civil Society Organisations lamented the subsidy removal and it attendant pains.
The varsity unions decried the situation, saying the subsidy was ’unintelligently removed.’
The National Assistant Secretary, NLC, Chris Onyeka, said the Central Working Committee of the congress would hold an important meeting today and take a position.
Finally, DSS Arraigns Emefiele In Court
The Department of State Services (DSS) has finally arraigned Godwin Emefiele, suspended governor of the Central Bank (CBN) in court.
He was arraigned on two-count charge before Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The first count was on possessing a single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without a licence, while the second count was having in his possession 123 rounds of live ammunition (Cartridges) without a licence.
Both charges are said to be in contravention of sections 4 and 8 of the Firearms Act Cap F28 Laws of the Federation, 2004, punishable under section 27 (1)(b)(i) of the Act.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.His lawyers led by former NBA president, Joseph Daudu (SAN), filed for his bail.
Emefiele has been in detention since President Bola Tinubu suspended him last month.
Tinubu mobilises $500m for Nigeria’s food system transformation-VP Shettima
Vice President Kashim Shettima has said that Nigeria has mobilized over half a billion dollars for innovative, profitable, equitable and sustainable food systems transformation initiative.
The Vice President made the disclosure while chairing a high-level meeting on the first day of the UN Food Systems Summit declared open in Rome, Italy by the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.
Vice President Shettima said the funds were mobilised “through domestic resources, multilateral development banks, international financial institutions, climate funds leading agro-businesses,” and would be used for “Innovation finance for food system transformation; development of Nigeria’s agro value chain and Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones programmes.”

Despite ranking among countries in the world with huge mobile connections, manufacturing of mobile phones in Nigeria has remained a mirage as over 99 per cent of mobile devices in the country come from abroad.
This is coming even as mobile connections in Nigeria are more than 320 million SIMs since the telecoms revolution began about two decades ago.
Active mobile connections through technology platforms such as GSM, fixed wired/wireless and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) are around 221.2 million.
Connections to the GSM platforms through mobile network operators (MNOs), largely the quartet of MTN, Globacom, Airtel and 9mobile, as at May 2023, stood at 220 million.
These figures have pushed the country’s telephone density to 115.9 per cent.
Police Arrest Four Suspects in Plot to Attack Atiku, Others
Former Vice President and presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that four persons, who plotted to attack him, have been arrested by the police in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
Reacting to the incident, PDP said it was alarmed, and it demanded a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, also called on the federal government to urgently investigate the attack on Atiku and beef up security around him.
In a statement by his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku said, “We wish to alert the Nigerian public that about 9:44pm on Sunday, 23 July, 2023, a man seeking to confirm the residence of His Excellency Atiku Abubakar in Yola was apprehended at the gate of the residence.
