Niger: UN, AU, ECOWAS meet on next move, NSCIA warns FG
Top diplomats from the United Nations, African Union and the Economic Community of West African States will Thursday (today) storm Abuja, the nation’s capital, to take major decisions at an Extraordinary Summit on the political development in the Niger Republic.
The summit, which is expected to plot the ouster of the junta, will be hosted by the Chairman of the ECOWAS of Heads of States and Government, President Bola Tinubu.
This came as the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs warned the Federal Government and ECOWAS against carrying out a military action in Niger.
The Deputy Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Prof. Salisu Shehu in a statement on Wednesday, warned that sanctions, like the ones imposed by ECOWAS, would be counter-productive and would have “socio-economic negative implications for both Nigerians and Nigeriens especially as we share common history and borders.”
Sanusi Briefs Tinubu After Meeting With Niger Junta
Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, 14th Emir of Kano, on Wednesday night, visited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.Sanusi arrived the Villa at about 8:25pm immediately after a high delegation of the Nigeria Islamic Ulama met with the President.
The former Emir just returned from Niger Republic where he had a meeting with the military junta that seized power from the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.
Daily Trust had earlier reported how Sanusi met the coup leaders to open a window for negotiation.
Sources told this newspaper that Sanusi went in personal capacity but briefed President Tinubu ahead of the trip.
A delegation raised by the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) could not broker peace with the military rulers as they declined a meeting.

As Heads of States of the Economic Community of West Africa States, ECOWAS, meet in Abuja today to take a position on the military junta in Niger Republic, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, 14th Emir of Kano, yesterday met with the coup leaders in Niamey, the country’s capital.Sanusi’s meeting with the coup leaders came as Niger’s former rebel leader launched an anti-coup movement in the first sign of internal resistance in the country.
This is even as the French government yesterday rejected accusations by Niger’s new military rulers that it freed “terrorists” and violated the country’s air space.
Niger Crisis: Islamic Council, Catholic Bishops Warn Against Military Invasion
More organisations, including Islamic leaders and Christian leaders, have voiced their support for a peaceful approach to resolving the crisis in Niger Republic following the military coup d’état that ousted President Muhammed Bazoum.
Yesterday, both the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and Catholic Bishops in West Africa urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and, in particular, President Bola Tinubu to avoid military action in Niger due to the ugly consequences of armed conflict on the ordinary people.
The apex Islamic body, headed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, advised ECOWAS and President Tinubu to retrace their hard stance against the Republic of Niger.
Tinubu okays Islamic clerics’ negotiations with Niger coup leaders
President Bola Tinubu has given the go-ahead for major Islamic groups to negotiate with military who ousted the democratically elected President of Niger Republic, Mohamed Bazoum.
After a meeting with the President on Wednesday at the presidential villa, Abuja, the Ulamas said that they are enjoined by their religious faith and the Quran to seek mediation first in conflicts before resorting to war.
Sheikh Bala Lau of Izalla group and Sheikh Abdurahman Ahmad of Ansar ud Deen, flanked by leaders of other sects, addressed correspondents after their meeting with Tinubu.
