The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned motorists against the use of substandard tyres and speeding to avert accidents.

Mr Jonas Agwu, the Corps Public Education Officer, said in a statement on Saturday in Abuja that the two were major contributors to road accidents in the country.

He said that the recent of such accidents, which claimed several lives, occurred in Kano and Kaduna states.

He therefore warned motorists to obey traffic laws including adherence to speed limit and complying with maximum safety requirements.

Agwu said that the reports of investigation submitted to the Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali-Biu regarding the incidents in Kano and Kaduna states showed that the Gaya Junction crash involved two vehicles.

“These are Toyota Hiace Bus and a Hijet Bus registered as KTG 190 XB and KTG 501YG,  respectively, which occurred on Friday.

“The report also revealed that the Gaya crash which was occasioned by speed limit violation, tyre burst involved 28 people comprising 17 male adults, five female adults, two male children and four female children,” he said.

According to him, from the number, 16 victims comprising five male adults, five female adults, two male children and four female children were injured while 12 persons including the driver, all male adults, were killed.

He said that an FRSC rescue team evacuated the injured victims to Gaya General Hospital for emergency medical attention.

“The dead bodies have also been deposited at the morgue of the same hospital,” he added.

Agwu also said that the Tashan Yari crash which occurred on Thursday, involved 57 people comprising 30 male adults, 22 female adults, and five female children.

He said: “From this number also, 30 victims were injured comprising 12 male adults, 15 female adults and three female children while six of the victims, all male adults, were reported killed.

“The crash which involved a trailer was caused by speed limit violation, use of worn out tyres that eventually led to loss of control.”

The FRSC spokesman added that those injured and the corpses were conveyed to General Hospital Makarfi, Kaduna State.

Agwu said that the Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali-Biu, has directed Commanding Officers to enforce compliance to road traffic rules in their areas of  responsibility.
