The Nigerian Army (NA) has firmly dismissed a viral audio-visual recording circulating online that falsely claims the Nigerian Army is recruiting Islamic fundamentalists and jihadists.
Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, clarified in a statement that the footage also incorrectly portrays an officer urging Muslim young men to join the military to protect and propagate Islam.
“The narrative depicted in the footage is not in any instance a reflection of the true values and standards of the Nigerian Army,” Major General Nwachukwu stated.
“It is targeted at sparking palpable anxiety and fear.”
The Army’s statement further explained that the misleading content aims to sow discord among military personnel, erode public confidence in the Nigerian Army, particularly among Christian and non-Muslim communities, and potentially incite a religious crisis in the country.

The NA emphasized its commitment to professionalism and impartiality, operating devoid of ethnic and religious biases.
“Our operational and administrative processes and actions are guided by the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and not ethnicity or religious sentiments,” the statement read.
Army’s reassurance
The Army reassured the public that any deviation from its Standing Operating Procedures (SOP) is met with appropriate disciplinary action, irrespective of the personnel’s religious affiliation.
Major General Nwachukwu urged the public to dismiss the misleading report, attributing it to a misconception and lack of understanding about the Nigerian army’s SOP. He called on citizens to rise above divisive tactics and stand united, emphasizing that Nigeria’s strength lies in its unity in diversity—a trait the NA seeks to protect while fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to serving and protecting all Nigerians, irrespective of religious or ethnic affiliations. Let us work together to maintain the peace and unity of our great nation,” he concluded.
