The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval for the establishment of four additional programmes at Ahmadu Bello University’s (ABU) Zaria Distance Learning Centre, effective from the 2023–2024 academic session.

Malam Auwalu Umar, Director of the Public Affairs Directorate at ABU, announced this development in a statement released on Monday in Zaria.

According to Umar, the approval was conveyed to ABU in a letter from the commission dated June 11, signed by the Acting Director of Open Distance and e-Learning, Dr. Funmilayo Morebise.

The newly approved programmes, which will be offered through the Open and Distance Learning mode, include B.Sc. Mass Communication and Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS). Additionally, the center will introduce Masters in Accounting and Masters in Disaster and Risk Management (MDRM).

With these additions, the total number of academic programmes offered at the ABU’s Distance Learning Centre has increased to 21, up from six in 2020.

Kaduna State University appoints new Librarian

The Governing Council of Kaduna State University (KASU) has appointed Dr. Babangida Dangani as the university’s librarian.

The University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Adamu Bargo, said in a statement in Kaduna on Thursday that Dangani took over from Prof. Abdullahi Musa, who was appointed the Vice-Chancellor of the University in October 2022.

Dangani holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Library and Information Science, a Master of Science in Information Science, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Information Science from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria.

He also obtained a Nigeria Certificate in Education in 1995 and emerged as the best graduating student in mathematics and integrated science from the Federal College of Education, Katsina.

His academic career began as a classroom teacher at Government Girls Secondary School, Dutsinma, Katsina State, in 1996, before he took up a job at Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic as an assistant lecturer in 2005.
