The Police Command in Oyo State has uncovered a plot by members of a cult group to incite violence among rival factions. SP Adewale Osifeso, the command’s spokesman, revealed this in a statement on Sunday in Ibadan.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the cult group, known as Aiye or Black Axe, typically engages in violence during its annual celebration on July 7.

“In its proactive nature, the command has intercepted credible intelligence about concluded plans by hoodlums/cultists to engage in wide-scale violence and retribution, especially among rival gangs in the state,” Osifeso stated.

Commissioner of Police Ayodele Sonubi has warned the group to abandon such plans, vowing that the command will resist any attempts to disturb the state’s peace. “The police command, in collaboration with sister security agencies, will clamp down heavily on anyone involved in triggering needless episodes of retributions, bloodletting, and destruction of lives and property,” he asserted.

Sonubi assured residents of comprehensive security coverage, including convoy patrols, intelligence-driven stop-and-search operations, and surveillance of critical infrastructure and public spaces. He advised parents and guardians to caution their wards against unlawful gatherings intending to breach the peace.

Furthermore, hoteliers and recreational facility proprietors are warned against permitting their venues for cult-related activities, as they will face prosecution if implicated.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. “Go about your businesses without any fear of harassment or intimidation from anyone,” Osifeso encouraged.
