A new state may soon be created in Nigeria, as a bill for the creation of Tiga State from Kano has been presented to the Nigerian Senate.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Kawu Suleiman Abdurrahman from Kano South, had its first reading on July 10, 2024.

Titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Creation of Tiga State Bill, 2024 (SB.523)”, the bill aims to split Kano State into two separate states, adding Tiga to the country’s political map.

This comes shortly after the Senate received a bill proposing the creation of Anioma State in the Southeast region, sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko from Delta North.

Additionally, there are bills for the creation of Orlu State, sponsored by Senator Osita Izunaso and Representative Ikenga Ugochineyere, and Etiti State, sponsored by Representative Amobi Godwin Ogah and four other lawmakers from the affected communities.

Calls for the creation of new states have also emerged from Lagos and other parts of the country, reflecting ongoing efforts to address regional and administrative concerns.
