In a country as diverse and vibrant as Nigeria, unity should always be at the forefront of our collective aspirations. As a concerned citizen from the Northern region, I am deeply committed to the cause of national unity and peace, advocating for bold steps to heal old wounds and build a stronger, more harmonious Nigeria.
Our country has faced significant challenges, with one of the most poignant chapters being the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War. This conflict led to the secession of the Igbo tribe and resulted in profound suffering and loss on all sides. The tragic assassination of Northern leaders Ahmadu Bello and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa marked the beginning of this period, leaving enduring scars.
However, today I write not to dwell on the painful past but to propose a path forward rooted in forgiveness, reconciliation, and a commitment to unity. It’s time to set aside historical bitterness and extend a hand of friendship and partnership to our Igbo brothers and sisters.

To achieve this vision, I propose several constitutional amendments aimed at fostering inclusivity and representation:
Firstly, establish a permanent Prime Minister position for the South East region with significant constitutional powers. This position should be complemented by appointing a Deputy Prime Minister from the South-South region. Additionally, ensure the central government leadership alternates between the Northern region as President and a Vice President from the South West. Depending on the President’s region of origin within the Northern region, the National Assembly leadership should reflect equitable representation from the remaining Northern regions. This arrangement aims to strengthen regional inclusion and enhance the nation’s overall unity and stability.
Secondly, recognize the Northern region’s diverse demographics and substantial population by granting it special recognition and increased representation in the central government. This acknowledgment is crucial for promoting inclusivity and unity, recognizing the North’s significant cultural and economic contributions to Nigeria.
Thirdly, grant constitutional recognition to traditional rulers nationwide and assign them specific duties related to conflict resolution, community development, and cultural preservation. Harnessing the cultural wealth and traditional wisdom of Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups can foster grassroots unity and peace.
Lastly, introduce State Police as a proactive measure to address security challenges effectively. State Police forces can enhance local security efforts, reduce response times, and facilitate collaboration between states and federal agencies. This approach aims to curb insecurity and improve citizen safety, overseen by a general framework of policing standards continually reviewed by the Ministry of Interior.
This comprehensive proposal seeks not only reconciliation but also lays a foundation for a united, prosperous, and secure Nigeria. It embraces diversity, acknowledges regional contributions, and empowers traditional rulers and local authorities.
As a concerned citizen, I call on fellow Nigerians to embrace this proposal, engage in constructive dialogue, and work collectively toward a brighter future for our beloved country. The time for healing and unity is now. Together, we can realize the dream of a truly united Nigeria.
