The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has intervened in the ongoing conflict between the Dangote Group and federal regulators concerning the Dangote Refinery.

In a series of tweets on his X handle, Obi called for the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation and other government agencies to handle the dispute with caution, emphasizing the potential economic consequences for Nigeria.

Obi stressed the need for comprehensive support for the refinery rather than criticism, highlighting its significant role in the country’s economic landscape. He wrote, “Dangote refinery should be fully supported, not vilified. The recent conflicts between Dangote Industries and some government agencies are deeply troubling.”

He further stated, “This issue transcends political affiliations and personal grievances. It is fundamentally about Nigeriaโ€™s economy, future, and the well-being of its citizens. Given Alhaji Dangoteโ€™s significant contributions to Nigeria, these disputes must be resolved swiftly.”

Peter Obi urged government agencies to facilitate the smooth launch and operation of the refinery, noting its potential to generate approximately $21 billion in annual revenue and create over 100,000 jobs, among numerous other economic benefits. “Its strategic importance in addressing Nigeriaโ€™s fuel crisis, boosting foreign exchange earnings, and fostering economic growth cannot be overstated,” he added.

Highlighting the broader implications, Peter Obi remarked, “The refinery is too vital to fail and must not be hindered, considering its crucial role in our national welfare. The Federal Government and its agencies need to recognize the significance of Dangoteโ€™s contributions. Alhaji Dangote is not just a businessman; he is a national and African brand symbolizing patriotism, commitment, and impactful entrepreneurship.”

Obi praised Aliko Dangoteโ€™s extensive contributions to Nigeria’s industrial landscape, despite the challenging business environment.
He pointed out that Dangote has established a remarkable industrial hub in Nigeria, covering over 15 sectors, including cement, sugar, salt, fertilizer, infrastructure, tomatoes, automotive, energy, petrochemicals, rice, polysacks, real estate, mining, logistics, and maritime.
