In a bold move to combat climate change and enhance urban greenery, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State on 24th July, 2024 has launched a monumental tree planting initiative aimed at planting 3 million trees across the state.

The initiative, officially announced by Governor Yusuf, aims to tackle climate change, soil erosion, land degradation, and desertification, while simultaneously boosting agricultural productivity.

Governor Yusuf emphasized the critical importance of the campaign, stating, “The 2024 Tree Planting Campaign is designed to prevent indiscriminate tree felling and mitigate the impacts of climate change. It will protect our soils, enhance our agricultural lands, and combat desertification.”

Under the leadership of Governor Yusuf, Kano State plans to plant a total of 10 million trees within the first term of his administration. The strategy involves widespread participation, engaging local government officials, traditional leaders, and households in the tree planting and nurturing process. Educational programs targeting youth across primary to tertiary institutions are also set to educate on the significance of tree planting.

Governor Yusuf issued a stern warning against unauthorized tree felling, affirming, “We will not hesitate to bring to book anyone found cutting trees without the necessary permits from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.”

Support for the initiative has been resounding, with the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, rallying local leaders to endorse and promote tree planting efforts in their respective communities. Highlighting the environmental and religious significance of the initiative, the Emir stressed its crucial role in addressing global climate challenges.

Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic support from the people of Kano and urged continued cooperation to ensure the success of the tree planting initiative and other government efforts.

The tree planting initiative is poised to make a substantial impact on Kano’s environmental sustainability, setting a precedent for proactive climate action across the region.
