Atletico Madrid announced on Monday the acquisition of striker Julian Alvarez from Manchester City in a deal reportedly worth up to 85 million euros ($93 million).

The Argentine forward has signed a contract with Atletico for the next six seasons.

“The club has reached an agreement with Manchester City for the transfer of the Argentine forward,” Atletico Madrid stated in their announcement. According to Spanish media, Atletico will initially pay 75 million euros, with the possibility of an additional 10 million euros in bonuses.

Alvarez joined Manchester City for just ยฃ14 million (16 million euros) in January 2022 from River Plate. During his time with City, the 24-year-old helped secure two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy, among other honors. He also played a pivotal role in Argentina’s World Cup victory in December 2022, as well as their Copa America wins in 2021 and 2024.

Reflecting on his time at Manchester City, Alvarez expressed his emotions on the clubโ€™s website: “Today I say goodbye to this amazing club, with a lot of emotion. These have been two very special years. During this time, I have grown and learnt a lot โ€” both as a player and as a person.”

Alvarez made 103 appearances for City, scoring 36 goals across all competitions. Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola commented last week, โ€œHeโ€™s incredibly loved by the team for his behavior, but like I said many times for many players, he wants to leave and have a new challenge.โ€

Atletico Madrid, managed by Diego Simeone, has also added Robin Le Normand and Alexander Sorloth to their roster as part of their extensive reinforcement efforts to challenge Real Madrid and Barcelona after finishing fourth in La Liga last season. Atletico will kick off their new campaign with an away match against Villarreal on August 19.
