Application Timeline
The recruitment period runs from 19th August to 26th August 2024. Make sure to submit your application within these dates, as late submissions will not be reviewed.
Positions Available
The British Army is currently seeking recruits for the following roles:
- Musician
- Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer
- Royal Engineers Technician and Tradesman
- Paratrooper
Referral Requirement
To apply for most positions, you need to link your application to the Recruit Bounty Referral Scheme, which involves getting a referral from a current British Army member. However, if you’re applying as a musician, you are exempt from this requirement. Musicians must meet the standards detailed on the Army Musicians page.
Medical Screening
As part of the recruitment process, medical screening is required, particularly for Sickle Cell traits. This is important due to the higher prevalence of Sickle Cell among certain Commonwealth populations. While having the trait doesnโt disqualify you, individuals at higher risk will need to undergo a diagnostic blood test before moving on to the fitness tests. This ensures that all recruits are fit for service.
Eligibility Requirements
For Soldiers:
- You must be at least 16 years old to apply (with applications starting at 15 years and 7 months, and assessments at 15 years and 9 months).
- You must enlist before turning 36.
- Those under 17 years and 6 months will first attend the Army Foundation College before commencing standard training.
For Officers:
- Age requirements range from 18 to 29 years, though exceptions can be made for specialist roles such as doctors.
- Candidates need 35 ALIS points from 7 subjects, including at least a C/4 grade in English Language, Maths, and either Science or a foreign language.
- You must also have 72 UCAS Tariff points from 3 subjects.
Fitness and Lifestyle Standards
Applicants must pass a series of fitness tests, including the Multistage Fitness Test (Beep Test), Seated Ball Throw, and Mid Thigh Pull. The Army offers resources and advice to help you achieve the required fitness levels. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial, including quitting smoking and following a balanced diet to meet the Body Mass Index (BMI) requirements.
Tattoos and Piercings
The British Army permits tattoos under certain conditions: they must not be offensive, obscene, or visible in a passport photo. Tattoos on the hands and neck are allowed, but those on the head or face are not. Piercings that significantly alter your appearance, such as large flesh tunnels, may disqualify you. All jewellery must be removed during physical activities.
Criminal Convictions
The British Army takes a rehabilitative approach to criminal convictions. You must disclose any unspent convictions, as failure to do so could lead to prosecution. Full transparency is required throughout the application process.
Opportunities for Younger Applicants
If you are not yet old enough to join the Army, consider the Army Cadet Force. It offers a chance to engage in military-themed activities, sports, and outdoor challenges, helping you develop survival skills and participate in the Duke of Edinburghโs Award, among other qualifications.
Application Process and Next Steps
The British army recruitment application period is strictly from 19th August to 26th August 2024. Candidates should be prepared to travel to the UK for further assessments in October and November 2024. Basic training will start between January and March 2025.
