Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally requested the State House of Assembly to approve a supplementary budget of N99 billion for the 2024 fiscal year.

The governor’s request was presented in a letter, which was read during Tuesday’s plenary session by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.

In the letter, Governor Yusuf urged the assembly to grant approval under sections 122(A and B) of the 1999 Constitution, emphasizing the importance of the funds for executing priority projects aimed at improving the well-being of Kano State citizens.

“The governor is seeking approval to accelerate and execute priority projects aimed at enhancing the well-being of citizens in the state,” Speaker Falgore stated during the plenary.

The supplementary budget outlines an allocation of N33 billion for personnel costs, N34 billion for overhead costs, and N30 billion for capital expenditure.

Speaking to journalists after the plenary session, the state Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Musa Shanono, explained that the initial budget for 2024 was N437.3 billion. “If you merge the original budget with the supplementary budget, passed into law, it will increase the 2024 budget to the tune of N536.6 billion,” Shanono noted.

He further emphasized that the supplementary budget would also accommodate the payment of the new minimum wage, as agreed upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Federal Government.

Shanono reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing infrastructural and human capital development, as well as improvements in the health and education sectors, stating that the supplementary budget would be instrumental in achieving these goals.
