The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has confirmed that the recently approved increase in corps members’ monthly allowance has not yet been implemented due to a lack of funds.
Despite an official announcement, corps members expected the allowance to rise from N33,000 to N77,000 starting in July 2024.

The increment was confirmed in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by its Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta.
However, corps members received N33,000 in September, sparking concerns. Speaking with BBC Hausa, Brigadier General Ahmed explained that while the Federal Government had approved the increase, funds have not been released to the NYSC for the payment.
โNot only the corps members, even our staff membersโ salary has been increased about four to five months ago, but it has not been implemented yet,โ Ahmed said. โWe are hopeful that the new pay will be implemented soon, but the funds have not been released to us yet.โ
He also noted that the timeline for the new allowance payments remains uncertain, stating, โThe information we have did not specify when the new allowance will be paid, but we were assured that their monthly allowance has been increased from 29th July 2024.โ
