A football dispute turned fatal in Kyobugombe Trading Centre, Western Uganda, where 22-year-old Benjamin Okello lost his life following an altercation with an Arsenal fan on Sunday, October 27th.
The incident reportedly began after a heated exchange over Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium, as reported by The Daily Monitor.

Witnesses described that the argument started in a local video hall where fans had gathered to watch the match. When Liverpool scored a late equalizer, Okello, a Manchester United supporter, celebrated and threw popcorn at the Arsenal fan, identified only as Onan. The playful taunt quickly escalated, culminating in a physical altercation after the game.
The confrontation was confirmed by Kaharo Sub County Chairperson, Mr. Edmond Tumwesigye. “Yesterday morning (Monday), I received information that two men fought on Sunday night at Kyobugombe trading centre. One was rushed to Bukinda Health Centre for treatment and then referred to Rugarama Regional Referral Hospital, where he died,” Tumwesigye said.
Kabale District Police Commander, Mr. Joseph Bakaleke, further explained, “We got information indicating that the two boys who supported different teams had a scuffle, and in so doing, one assaulted the other. It is alleged that when the injured was taken to the hospital, he later met his death.”
Bakaleke also confirmed that authorities are now searching for the suspect, Onan, who is reportedly known for criminal activities in the area.
Relatives of Okello have expressed grief and are demanding justice. Meanwhile, Mr. Bakaleke has appealed for calm and encouraged the family to remain patient as the investigation unfolds.
“We have tried to encourage the relatives of the deceased to calm down as we hunt for the suspect. We are also gathering information from witnesses to aid the investigation,” Bakaleke added.
The police have called on anyone with information or who witnessed the altercation to assist in the ongoing investigation.
