WhatsApp has introduced its new “custom chat lists” feature to millions of users worldwide, aimed at improving how users organize their chats.

The feature is a positive evolution of the app’s previous chat filter function, which allowed users to search for specific conversations by date or keywords.

According to a note on the company’s blog, “With Lists, you can now filter your chats with custom categories of your choice. Whether that’s a list for family, work, or your local neighborhood, Lists help you focus on the conversations that are most important, when you need them.”

To create a custom list, users simply tap the “+” icon on the filter bar at the top of their chats tab. They can also create or edit a list by long-pressing an existing one. “Similar to your ‘favourites’, you can add both groups and one-on-one chats to a list, and any list you create will appear in the filter bar,” the company added.

The feature is already available on millions of devices in India and will be rolled out to all users in the coming weeks. India, with over 535 million active users, remains WhatsApp’s largest market globally.

In addition to custom chat lists, WhatsApp introduced several other features in its latest updates. Users can now like WhatsApp status updates with a heart icon, interact with Meta AI via voice prompts, and save unfinished messages as drafts.

A new contact sync management setting also allows users to control whether WhatsApp syncs contacts across multiple devices.
