Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has pledged to procure Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to tackle transportation challenges caused by the removal of the fuel subsidy.

Speaking at the inauguration of 10 CNG buses by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Kano State Branch on Katsina Road, Yusuf outlined his administrationโ€™s transportation initiatives.

According to a statement by the governorโ€™s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, Yusuf announced plans to convert 30 of the 80 luxury buses, abandoned by the previous administration, to CNG. โ€œThe remaining 50 buses will bolster the fleet transporting students daily,โ€ he added.

Yusuf lauded President Bola Tinubu for facilitating the provision of CNG vehicles to all 36 states, describing it as a step toward mitigating the effects of subsidy removal. He also commended the NLC for selecting Kano as the launch site for the buses and assured continued collaboration to address citizens’ needs.

The governor revealed plans to establish a fully equipped CNG service center for vehicle maintenance and promised to allocate land for constructing an NLC Institute in Kano. โ€œWe will soon lay the foundation and encourage contributions toward its development,โ€ Yusuf stated.

NLC President Joe Ajaero, present at the event, praised Kanoโ€™s swift implementation of the โ‚ฆ71,000 minimum wage and urged other states to follow suit. โ€œGovernments that fail to implement the approved wage increase will face consequences,โ€ Ajaero warned.

Kano State NLC Chairman Kabiru Inuwa also advocated for the construction of the NLC Institute at their premises, highlighting its importance for labour advancement.

During a courtesy visit, Yusuf reiterated his administrationโ€™s commitment to citizens’ welfare and its alignment with the goals of labour unions. โ€œThe NLC is a critical institution focused on improving workersโ€™ well-being,โ€ he said.

The governor further hosted NLC executives at a dinner where the Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, expressed gratitude on behalf of the state for their support and partnership.
