The Commander of the Ekiti State Amotekun Corps, retired Brig. Gen. Joe Komolafe, stated on Saturday that the corps in various South-West states had made significant progress in combating crime in their domains in the zone.
The Ekiti Amotekun Commander, who spoke in Ado Ekiti while hosting the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Zone B, said that while the corps in the state had accomplished much since its inception, it still needed to overcome some challenges in order to improve operations.
“Since I took office, we have arrested 79 kidnappers and turned them over to the police for prosecution,” Komolafe said. We’ve also successfully resolved 63 farmer-herder clashes.
“We arrived at a time when the South-West zone was experiencing insecurity, but with a lot of hard work and dedication, we were able to bring the situation under control.”
In addition to kidnappers, he said, the corps had arrested armed robbers, ritualists, rapists, human traffickers, and other criminals.
However, the Amotekun boss, who urged residents of the state to provide necessary information to the corps in order to ensure the arrest of criminals and the prevention of crime, stated that the security body required additional operational vehicles, offices, and personnel.
Earlier, NUJ National Vice President Ronke Afebioye praised Amotekun’s efforts in combating crime in the region.
Afebioye urged the state government to meet the security body’s various challenges “by providing its men and officers with modern facilities and necessary logistics that can enhance their operations.”
Afebioye also called for the passage of legislation that would allow corps officers to carry weapons and prosecute suspects.
