The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed its support for the recent arrest of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, viewing it as a significant advancement in the battle against corruption in Nigeria.

In a statement released shortly after the news of Okowa’s apprehension, the party emphasized that this action reflects the current administration’s commitment to tackling long-standing issues of financial mismanagement and corruption at both state and national levels.

Okowa, who held the governorship from 2015 to 2023, was taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on allegations of embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds during his time in office. The charges pertain to various financial dealings and questionable contracts awarded while he was governor.

Valentine Onojeghuo Esq., the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, signed the statement made available to news outlets in Asaba, the state capital. The Delta APC commended the Federal Government for its decisive actions and urged the EFCC to continue its investigations into the financial activities of other former state governors and public officials.

โ€œThis move reflects a larger national agenda to clamp down on corruption, promote transparency, and ensure that public funds are used for the benefit of ordinary citizens rather than for personal enrichment,โ€ the statement noted.

The APC described Okowaโ€™s administration as one marked by โ€œone of the worst cases of financial recklessness and mismanagement on a monumental scale.โ€ The statement accused him of diverting substantial state funds for personal gain, including the establishment of a bank and financing his failed presidential ambition. It also criticized the imposition of his chosen successor as governor, which they claim went against the wishes of the Delta State populace seeking change.

Furthermore, the APC emphasized that the arrest serves as a warning to all public office holders, reinforcing that the era of impunity is over. โ€œNo one, regardless of their position or political affiliation, is above the law,โ€ the statement read.

The party reiterated its belief that the fight against corruption must be persistent and thorough, expressing satisfaction with the administration’s bold steps in this direction.
