Salihu Lukman, the National Vice Chairman representing the North-West zone of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has tendered his resignation from his position.
In a letter addressed to the party’s Acting National Chairman, Lukman cited a significant disconnect between the current party atmosphere and the original vision of forming a progressive party as the reason for his resignation.
In the resignation letter, Lukman expressed his conviction that the APC has veered off course from the core principles that formed the foundation of a progressive party.
He stated, “My resignation is with immediate effect, which become necessary given my conviction that the atmosphere in the party is completely at variance with the founding vision of forming a progressive party.”
He also highlighted his desire not to serve as a distraction to the party’s leaders, particularly the government of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He said expressed, “Rather than remaining in the leadership of the party and become a source of distraction for leaders and especially for the young government of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it is better to excuse myself and take time off from politics.”
While resigning from his leadership role, Lukman declared his intention to maintain his membership in the APC.
He hoped that the party’s leaders, especially President Tinubu, would reconsider actions that might be deemed unjust and illegal.
According to Lukman, upholding democratic and progressive values is crucial for the party’s identity both as politicians and as patriotic Nigerians.
In his letter, Lukman also conveyed his gratitude to the party’s leaders in Kaduna, particularly Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, for nominating him to serve at the highest level of the party’s leadership.
He expressed hope that all the party’s leaders would understand that he felt left with no other option in the given circumstances.
As the APC responds to Lukman’s resignation, it remains to be seen how the party will address the concerns raised by him and what impact his departure will have on the party’s internal dynamics and regional support.
it would be recalled that last week Senators Iyiola Omisore and Abdullahi Adamu, the national chairman and secretary, also submitted their letters of resignation.
In the same vein Luqman had expressed his disapproval over the possible emergence of Ganduje as the party’s national chairman, describing it as “suicidal.”
