Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, Atiku Abubakar, highlighted the importance of incorporating history into the school curriculum.
Atiku, a former Vice President of Nigeria, made this call during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the family of late Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule to his residence in Abuja.
Muhammad Sule, leader of the delegation and son-in-law of the late statesman, expressed gratitude for the warm reception and shared their plans to establish the Maitama Sule Foundation.
Additionally, they announced the upcoming launch of two books by Isa Rabe Kambarawa, honoring the late elder statesman.
The purpose of the visit was to recognize Atiku’s virtues, his contributions to the nation’s development, and his alignment with Maitama Sule’s liberal political philosophy.
Atiku expressed appreciation for the visit and pledged his support for their plans, acknowledging the significant impact made by the late Danmasanin of Kano.
Yusuf Maitama Sule, a Nigerian politician, diplomat, and statesman, served as the country’s Representative at the United Nations and chaired the United Nations’ Special Committee Against Apartheid during the Second Republic.
Atiku stressed that studying history is crucial to unveil the remarkable roles played by extraordinary individuals like Maitama Sule in shaping the nation.
He emphasized that history is not merely about past events but also about the exceptional men and women who have influenced its course.
Atiku firmly believed that studying the heroic deeds of past leaders and incorporating their values and ideals into the minds of present and future generations ensures their sacrifices are not in vain.
In light of this, he recommended including History as a vital part of the school curriculum, serving as a valuable guide for the generations to come.
