The newly established Katsina State Safety and Road Traffic Authority (KASROTA), says it will soon commence the enforcement of road traffic rules and regulations in the state.

Its Director-General(DG), retired AIG Danlami Yar’adua disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Katsina.

Yar’adua, therefore, appealed to motorists across the state to desist from violating road traffic rules and regulations to avoid being sanctioned.

“Motorcycle and tricycle riders should also avoid overload because it is an offence to do so.

“We have met with their leadership to inform them about the new development and none of them should be found wanting,” the DG said.

He also advised hawkers along major roads and traders occupying walkways to desist from that before the commencement of the enforcement of the law.

According to the KASROTA DG, the authority has provided punishment for the defaulters, including fines from N5,000 and above, saying about 100 offences were mentioned in their law.

The retired AIG said that Gov. Aminu Masari has approved their request for the procurement of all the necessary equipment and facilities needed by the authority.

He said that some of the KASROTA officials have been placed in some strategic locations to control traffic before the authority fully begins operations.

“If you notice, there are some traders or hawkers that turned walkways into their places of business, it is an offence, we are calling on them to stop before we start enforcement.

“Also, those hawkers at junctions and roundabouts causing obstructions and accidents, should stop it because it’s an offence in the law that established KASROTA.

“We are also calling on the motorists with the habit of double parking and preventing other vehicles passage, to kindly end it before measures  are taken against them,” he warned.

Yar’adua decried that some traders had turned the roads to places of business, warning, ”we will meet their leaders before taking serious measures  on them.

“By God’s grace, when our operation begins fully, all these attitudes will come to an end, if they don’t stop willingly, they will stop by force.

“We are going to arrest any defaulter and fine them. All these road obstructions caused by the hawkers, traders, motorists, tricycle and motorcycle riders should be stopped.

“We are also calling on the members of the public to avoid keeping sands or blocks on the roads when undertaking constructions, because it is obstructing passage.

“But, some still do that. We are calling on them to stop such nefarious acts henceforth before we embark on serious enforcement of the law on them,” Yar’adua warned. (NAN)
