Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has sparked online reactions after criticizing the presidency’s communication team for attacking former President Olusegun Obasanjo amidst Nigeria’s worsening economic crisis.

Daily News 24 reports that Bashir in a tweet on his X (formerly Twitter) account on thursday, described the ongoing criticism of Obasanjo as misplaced and irrational, stating, “Attacking Obasanjo with the state of the country now has to be a mental illness permeating the whole media comms team. Inflation is at 33% o.”
His mother, Hadiza Isma El-Rufai, weighed in on the matter by quoting his tweet with a pointed question: “Are you sure you’d be saying this if your father were part of this government?”
The mother-son exchange drew attention on social media, as many interpreted Hadiza’s response as sarcasm or a challenge to Bashir’s consistency in his criticisms, especially considering his father’s previous role in the current administration.
The tweets come on the heels of remarks made by Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, who had lambasted Obasanjo for criticizing Tinubu’s administration. Dare described Obasanjo’s government as “the most corrupt in Nigeria’s history” and demanded an apology to Nigerians.
Dare’s comments were in response to Obasanjo’s recent lecture at Yale University, where he labeled Nigeria a “failing state” under Tinubu and called for the dismissal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, and other electoral officials.
