Bright Okpocha, better known by his stage name Basketmouth, is a Nigerian comedian and actor. He has organized popular stand-up comedy concerts like Basketmouth Uncensored across the globe.
Early life
Bright Okpocha was born in Lagos but is originally from Abia State in Nigeria. He finished primary and secondary school in Lagos before enrolling at the University of Benin in Edo State to pursue a degree in Sociology and Anthropology.
In 1991, he discovered his talent for drumming, and in 1994, he began rapping. He then formed a group called “Da Psychophats,” which consisted of seven members, and they began going to shows and rapping in 1995, but they disbanded before releasing any material.
He went on to form another rap group called “Da Oddz” with his brother Godwin and Muyiwa Ola-Phillips. They performed a few shows but failed to break through because their style of rap was not accepted in Nigeria.
Education
Basket Mouth completed his primary and secondary school education in Apapa (Lagos, Nigeria), and then went on to study sociology and anthropology at the University of Benin with his brother Godwin.
Music and appearances
In 2014, he founded the record label Barons World Entertainment.
He released a highlife album titled ‘Yabasi’ as a soundtrack for the movie ‘Papa Benji’ in November 2020. Artists on the album included Ladipoe, BOJ, The Cavemen, Bez, Waje, Duncan Mighty, Flavour, and Phyno.
In 2022, he released the album Horoscope, which featured Johnny Drille, Simi, M.I Abaga, Buju, Peruzzi, Oxlade, Reekado Banks, Flaz, Magnito, Illbliss, Dremo, and Flavour as guests.
Basketmouth made an appearance in the Lagbaja music video Gra Gra in 2000.
Basketmouth won the National Comedy Award and the award for Best Stand-up Comedian of the Year in 2005 and 2006. He was nominated alongside fellow comedian Mr Funny for the inaugural edition of The Humour Awards Academy in 2021.
Basketmouth appeared in Africa Magic’s “My Flatmates” show (2016).
Basketmouth recently hosted Nigerian tycoon Femi Otedola at his home.
He launched his comedy web series “Papa Benji” in December 2020.
