Bayero University, Kano has commissioned its modern Television station in the Faculty of Communication on Wednesday, 22nd March 2022.

The digital Campus Television which is the first of its kind installed in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions with equipment of international standards serves as a training ground for students in broadcast journalism.

The Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas noted that the commissioning of the Television station was a significant milestone in the university as it would ensure that students are given the pragmatic aspect of education with the sophisticated equipment the new Tv station boasts of. He believes that journalism will be intensified through pragmatic learning, one which will improve the ranking of the university both nationally and internationally.

Prof. Sagir noted that the huge investment of MacArthur foundation in the faculty of communication in Bayero University Kano is one which has fine-tuned a brand new digital learning facility which includes the University’s online journalism training facilities, digital Radio and broadcasting studios as well as a reviewed curriculum.

He said that the capacity of many staff has been increased in investigative and data-driven journalism through training and media industry collaborations and it has helped to introduce courses in investigative journalism and data journalism with opportunities for practical performance in the University’s Radio and the newly commissioned Television station.

”As the trained students will graduate and work as professionals that would help check corruption in the country. We are overjoyed that the digital station will be unveiled for full broadcast services. The station will be responsibly used to train journalists who will graduate to work professionally to expose the incidences of corruption in the country. Today, BUK has the most sophisticated campus broadcasting complex in the country, courtesy of the MacArthur Foundation.

”It is with a great sense of joy and gratitude that I, on behalf of the council, management, staff and students of this university convey our sincere and profound appreciation to the president and board of MacArthur foundation for their confidence, trust, and huge investment in Bayero University  Kano  and we are glad that the foundation has kept put in our university over time.” He said

The president of MacArthur Foundation, Mr John Palfrey said that irrespective of the Covid-19 pandemic and the ASUU strike, the University has been resilient and found time to see that the television station is being commissioned. He stated that the BUK’s mass communication department is poised to be the best in Nigeria as its facilities are top-notch, one which is of the highest international standard.

He said ”The Tv station is one which is gigantic, it is promising and has great prospect to bring about a new generation of journalism entirely, across both the male and female gender. We had a very high expectation of this facility and I am pleased to say that that expectation has been met and even exceeded both in terms of the sophistication of the equipment.”

In his remarks, the Chairman, Faculty of Communication MacArthur Grant Committee, Professor Umaru Pate noted that as the faculty is a center of excellence where students are trained to be professionals in their various fields to be equipped to face the growing challenges in Nigeria through investigative journalism  to strengthen the process of democracy in the country

”Even if our license is a commercial one, our focus will be on educational activities and how they can be enhanced in Nigeria. It will be a training ground for broadcast investigative journalism and we will see to the promotion of media sustainability while encouraging the use of indigenous languages.” Prof. Pate assured.

The newly commissioned television station consists of a production studio, master control room, production control room, central apparatus room, audio booth, among other facilities for television production.

Hauwau Sani, a level 400 student of the department of mass communication told Daily News24 that the television station will enhance the broadcast skills of her and other students in the university. ”I am happy that BUK now has a TV station and I will be trained on how to host programs, handle cameras and TV equipment. I am also eager to learn the in-and-out of investigative and data journalism.

Likewise, Miftahu Ahmad Panda a level 100 student of the mass communication department said he is certain that the TV station will add to the theoretical knowledge he and his coursemates receive in the lecture room. ”With this new Television station, it will add to the theoretical knowledge I have of broadcasting. I am very happy because it will help me meet up with the 21century broadcasting standard,” he said.
