Kano state governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the sum of N71,000 as minimum wage for all workers in Kano state.
Daily News 24 reports that Governor Yusuf announced this on Tuesday after a meeting with leaders of labour unions in the state.
In a post on his X account, the governor said the new minimum wage will take effect from November 1, 2024.
“In line with our commitment to social justice and enhancement of the standard of living for our workers, we have approved the sum of 71,000 naira as the new minimum wage in Kano State,” the governor wrote.
“This new minimum wage will take effect from November, and it will increase our monthly salary obligations by 6 billion naira at the state level and 7 billion naira for the local government councils,” he added.
“Additionally, following the promotion of 20,737 teachers by our government, a total increment amounting to the sum of over 340 million naira has now been reflected in their respective salaries.
“Once again, I commend the state minimum wage implementation committee for its commendable job,” Governor Yusuf said.
With this decision, Kano state has joined the few states across Nigeria who have implemented a new minimum wage after the federal government approved N70,000 as new wage for all workers in July, 2024.
