On Sunday, President Muhammadu Buhari arrived in Washington, DC for the United States-Africa Leaders Summit.

According to reports, President Buhari arrived at the Joint Base Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland around 6.25 p.m. local time.

The president was greeted by Geoffrey Onyeama, Nigeria’s Foreign Minister; Dr. Uzoma Emenike, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States; and Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

The Consul-General of Nigeria in New York, Amb. Lot Egopija, and his counterpart in Atlanta, Amb. Amina Smaila, were among the other Nigerian diplomats on the ground to greet the president.

Buhari was accompanied by Bauchi and Kwara governors Bala Mohammed and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, as well as some ministers and other top government officials.

President Buhari will join other African leaders at the High-Level Meeting, which will take place between Tuesday, December 13 and Thursday, December 15 at the request of US Vice President Joe Biden.

“We call on African governments, civil society, diaspora communities across the United States, and the private sector to continue strengthening our shared vision for the future of US-Africa relations,” presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said in a statement.

On the first day, Shehu stated that Buhari would speak on “Conservation, Climate Adaptation, and a Just Energy Transition,” emphasizing the “Just Energy Transition” component.

Shehu went on to say that the Nigerian president would also speak on some of the summit’s other sub-themes and attend the US-Africa Business Forum (USABF).

The US Department of Commerce will host the forum, which will focus on increased trade and investment between the US and African nations.

The Corporate Council of Africa will host a Nigerian delegation to a US-Nigeria Business and Investment Forum Business Roundtable on the sidelines of the summit.

According to him, Nigerian organizations and businesses are expected to sign agreements with their American counterparts during the meeting.
