Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG), Ogun branch, has embarked on inspection of construction sites to ensure that developers and contractors adhere strictly to approved building plans, rules and regulations.

BCPG Chairman in the state, Mr Olusegun Sogbetun, told newsmen during the inspection of some construction sites in Abeokuta that the guild’s mission was to observe and make necessary recommendations to the state government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that BCPG comprises engineers, architects, builders, surveyors, estate valuers, town planners and quantity surveyors.

Sogbetun said that the guild was also out to enlighten the public on proper construction of buildings and any structure that fell within the profession.

He noted that there had been many cases of building collapse in some parts of Nigeria, in which lives and property were lost.

The BCPG chairman said that the guild had been in existence since 2013, adding that it observed that its impact would not be felt without synergising with the government.

“We work together with the government agency in charge of building productions management, that is, the Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning which issues building plans approval for developers.

“After approval must have been issued by government, the ministry usually finds it difficult to go round and see if developers are really obeying the rules and regulations that come along with the approval.

“The major aspect is to ensure that what is written on the paper is being strictly adhered to, so that one will have a very safe structure that will stand the test of time,” he said.

Sogbetun said BCPG was not carrying out enforcement, but only observed and recommended to government what should be done, where necessary.

He urged the masses to conform to standards while erecting structures to avoid building collapse. (NAN)
