Just a week before production was set to start, the rapper has exited the Paramount Players comedy Assisted Living in which she was set to star. According to deadline, she pulled out at the last minute because she is overextended.

Other cast and crew were told the film has at least temporarily been scratched.

Cardi was set to play Amber, a small-time criminal on the run from cops after she is wrongly accused of a crime. While trying to prove her innocence, she disguises herself as an elderly woman and hides out in the place she thinks no one will find her–her estranged grandmother’s nursing home.

Assisted Living was sold to Paramount following a competitive bidding war in the spring of 2019. Thembi Banks was directing the $30 million film, based on an original spec script by “This Is Us” writer Kay Oyegun.

When a star pulls out of a movie this late, there can be legal repercussions. However, there is hope that the film can resume production later this year.

Cardi made her feature film debut opposite Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, and Keke Palmer in the 2019 stripper crime drama Hustlers, which grossed over $150 million at the box office. She also appeared in F9, the latest installment in the Fast & Furious franchise.

The hip-hop superstar previously announced plans to release her sophomore album this year, with a new single on the way. “My next single is super pressure,” she told a fan. (RapUp)
